If the planets are the actors in your birth chart and the signs are their costumes, the houses are the stage: twelve areas of life, from your sense of self and your money to your home, work, relationships and inner world. The houses are calculated from your birth time and place. The Ascendant — the point of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon when you were born — marks the start of the 1st house, and the other eleven follow around the wheel.
That is why the houses are the most personal layer of a chart. Two people born on the same day share almost all their planet signs, but if they were born a few hours apart, the same planets fall into different houses. Without a birth time the houses cannot be calculated reliably; you can still read the planets in their signs, and some astrologers use whole-sign houses counted from the Sun sign as a rough substitute.
Houses come in three groups. Angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th and 10th) begin at the four angles of the chart and are linked with action and visible events. Succedent houses (2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th) build on what the angular houses start: resources, creativity, shared commitments and community. Cadent houses (3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th) are about learning, adjusting and digesting experience. Each house also has a natural sign — the 1st corresponds to Aries, the 2nd to Taurus and so on — which makes its themes easier to remember.
An empty house is not a problem: with ten planets and twelve houses, some houses are always empty, and their themes are read through the sign on the cusp and the planet that rules it. Different house systems can move a planet into a neighbouring house, especially at high latitudes. Our charts use Placidus by default and switch to whole-sign houses where Placidus cannot be calculated.
Angular, succedent and cadent
