What the planets mean in a birth chart

A birth chart is a snapshot of the sky at the moment you were born: where the Sun, the Moon and the planets stood, seen from your place of birth. Astrology reads each of these bodies as a different part of you — the Sun as your core identity, the Moon as your emotional needs, Mercury as the way you think and talk, Venus as what you love and value, Mars as your drive. A planet describes a function, something you do; the sign it sits in describes how you do it, and the house it falls in shows where in life it shows up most.

The planets move at very different speeds, and that changes how personal they are. The Moon crosses a whole sign in about two and a half days, so it can differ even between people born a few days apart. Mercury, Venus and Mars change sign every few weeks or months. Jupiter spends about a year in each sign and Saturn about two and a half years, which is why classmates often share them. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto stay in one sign for seven to more than twenty years, so their sign speaks about a generation, while their house position is what makes them personal.

Two more points complete the picture. The North Node is not a body but the place where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's apparent path; astrologers read it as a direction of growth. Chiron is a small body orbiting between Saturn and Uranus, associated with sensitive spots that can turn into wisdom. Personal planets
