The Ascendant: what it is and how it's calculated
What is the Ascendant?
The Ascendant, or rising sign, is the degree of the zodiac that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It marks the start of the first house, and many astrologers describe it as the chart's front door: the way you meet new people and situations, your instinctive first moves and the impression you make before others know you well.
The Ascendant is also the starting point of the whole chart. It fixes where each house begins, and the planet that rules the rising sign – the chart ruler – carries extra weight in interpretation.
Ascendant, Sun and Moon: the Big Three
The Sun sign is the one most people know; it describes your core identity and vitality. The Moon sign speaks about emotional needs and what makes you feel safe. The Ascendant adds the outer layer: style, first reactions and the way you engage with the world. Together they are called the Big Three, and they are why two people with the same Sun sign can seem so different.
That's why this calculator returns your Ascendant and Moon together with your Sun, and adds the Descendant – the point opposite the Ascendant, linked with partners – and the Midheaven, associated with vocation and public life.
Why the exact birth time matters
Because the Earth turns, a new degree of the zodiac rises about every four minutes, and the rising sign changes roughly every two hours. The pace is uneven: at the latitude of Bulgaria, Aries and Pisces rise in just over an hour, while each sign from Leo to Scorpio takes about two and a half hours. If you were born near the start or end of such a stretch, a few minutes can change your rising sign.
To help with that, the result shows the exact local time window during which your rising sign stayed the same at your birthplace. If your recorded time is rounded, check whether the real moment could fall outside it.
How to find out your Ascendant
It takes less than a minute:
- Find your birth time – on your birth certificate, in hospital papers or by asking your family.
- Enter the date, the time in 24-hour format and your place of birth.
- Read your Ascendant's sign and degree, then the time window: if it's wide, your rising sign is secure.

Descendant and Midheaven
The Descendant is always exactly opposite the Ascendant: with Leo rising, your Descendant is in Aquarius. It opens the seventh house and is traditionally linked with the qualities you look for – or meet – in close partners. The Midheaven (MC) is the highest point of the ecliptic in your chart and opens the tenth house; astrologers associate it with direction, vocation and reputation. Unlike the Descendant, its distance from the Ascendant is not fixed but depends on latitude.
